S&P 500 Index notches new record high after impressive July NFP print

  • Wall Street's main indexes trade mixed on Friday.
  • Energy shares rise sharply after the opening bell.
  • Nonfarm Payrolls in US rose by 943,000 in July.

Major equity indexes in the US opened on a mixed note on Friday as investors assess the later labour market report data from the US. As of writing, the S&P 500 Index, which touched a new record high of 4,440, was up 0.2% on the day at 4,437. Moreover, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was rising 0.45% at 35,223 and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.2% at 14,865.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced on Friday that Nonfarm Payrolls in the US rose by 943,000, beating the market expectation of 870,000 by a wide margin. Additionally, the Unemployment Rate declined to 5.4% in July from 5.9% in June.

Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, the Energy Index is up 1.5% on the back of recovering crude oil prices. Additionally, the Financials Index is rising more than 1% supported by a more-than-4% increase in the benchmark 10-year US Treasury bond yield. On the other hand, the Healthcare Index is down 0.45% as the worst-performing major sector.
